Support for Disabled Veterans

White Apple Institute connects, educates, and supports disabled veterans and their eligible family members, particularly those who are 'underserved' within the differently-abled network. These individuals are striving to achieve their higher education goals and succeed in the workforce through various veteran education resources.

The 'underserved' veteran and other persons with disabilities are often those who cannot access necessary VA and community services due to several factors, such as:

- Inability to prove a Service-Connected Disability or having a low disability rating that disqualifies them from many VA services.

- Limited access to resources due to geographic location, transportation issues, and various social, economic, psychological, and cultural barriers.

- A need for assistance to CONNECT to resources available in their community.

- The necessity for EDUCATION regarding self-advocacy, self-help, accommodations, and mediation for discrimination complaints.

- The requirement for SUPPORT from qualified mentors to overcome emotional and financial crises that can impact their performance in the classroom and/or workplace.

Smiling woman wearing headphones and speaking into a microphone in a cozy studio.

Danita Applewhite PhD, CRC (aka "Doc Apple") is the Founder/CEO of the White Apple Institute, a talk show host, disability advocate, Army veteran, speaker, author, retired psychology professor, and vocational rehabilitation counselor.

Her audience is inspired by a variety of self-help topics and motivated with tips on managing pain, stress, and related disabling conditions experienced in the classroom and on the job. Since 2009, Dr. Applewhite, along with fellow veterans, volunteers, and student interns, has helped thousands of individuals within the differently-abled network enhance their performance, succeed in the workforce, and prevent dropout from school, work, and life.

You must listen to this show if YOU or someone you know is:

- Having difficulty with performance in the classroom or on the job and frequently withdrawing from classes, quitting, or being fired?

- Feeling like you are too old or disabled to finish the goals you started a long time ago?

- Dealing with stress from an emotional or financial crisis that could lead to dropout of school, work, and life?

- Losing hope in the struggle to juggle overwhelming class, work, family, or parenting schedules alongside chronic pain?

- Embarrassed about discussing your dreams and goals because people may laugh about your mental and/or non-visible disability?

- Facing discrimination because of disability, race, or sexual orientation? This show is LGBTQ friendly and safe.

Join the conversation and discover valuable veteran education resources and disabled veterans support that can empower you on your journey.

Clear jar tipped over spilling various coins on a white surface.

By FALL 2019, the students and veterans of White Apple Institute, along with members of the Differently-Abled Network (DAN), are excited to launch the Place Your B.E.T.S. On Our Students and VETS campaign.

This impactful campaign will be featured on the ASK Dr. Applewhite Talk Show, where veterans and their family members will share their inspiring stories about overcoming chronic hopelessness and homelessness, as well as navigating various socio-cultural and psychological challenges that put many at risk of dropping out of school, work, and life.

Most importantly, they will ASK our audience via the Internet to assist in providing the necessary veteran education resources that will help them achieve their higher education goals and succeed in the workforce.

What are Business Education & Training Sponsorships?

In 1992, Danita Applewhite PhD-CRC introduced the Business, Education, Training Sponsorship (B.E.T.S.) program to highlight the benefits of sponsoring ‘underserved’ individuals in workforce development initiatives.

Dr. Applewhite initially crafted the B.E.T.S. program for students at KEYS Community Center in Phoenix, AZ, with the support of the Southeast Leadership Foundation. She has since developed various training programs based on the B.E.T.S. framework, customizing them for sponsors such as MechTronics, Pepsi-Cola, Simon & Schuster, Hilton Hotel, and Chase Bank (formerly Bank One).

Through her research and collaboration with colleagues, Dr. Applewhite identified that the primary reasons individuals—especially those in disabled veterans support—often drop classes, leave jobs, and lose hope are due to:

- Lack of access to loving support at home, school, and work

- Limited knowledge about available resources

- Challenges in managing absenteeism related to stress, chronic pain, and disability

- Insufficient planning and coping strategies during emotional and financial crises.

This segment of the ASK Dr. Applewhite Talk Show will showcase underserved men and women veterans who are determined to complete their education and thrive in the workforce and in life.

*The term 'underserved' typically refers to rural and socio-economically disadvantaged communities in need of medical resources. However, Dr. Applewhite has expanded this definition to encompass women, veterans, minorities, non-English speakers with anxiety disorders, and individuals with both visible and non-visible disabilities.
